Write something that expresses how you might see yourself bringing this about and what kind of things you see yourself doing. Where your vision statement was deliberately grandiose, this statement needs to be grounded in realism. Having said that, don’t limit yourself too much. Let yourself dream a bit and stretch some. What do you think is possible for you? What would you like to happen – in the short term and then in the long term?

3. Goals That Support My Vision

Note: A goal is different from an aim or intention. If you aim at something, or intend something, there is the possibility of falling short or missing the mark. A goal, on the other hand, is less forgiving in terms of whether or not it is reached. You can aim for something and miss but you aimed nevertheless. But with a goal you either reach it or you don’t. Therefore, a goal is much more specific and something you definitely commit to achieving. A goal is even more achievement specific.

Having outlined your vision for an aspect of your life and have a sense of what you might be aiming for, begin to create some medium and short term goals.

How to Write Goals That Work

We manifest with our thoughts – and goals are just thoughts. But our creative power is very weak if our thoughts have no emotion attached to them. Emotion is the fuel that turbo-charges our thoughts and gives them energy.

So make sure you put into your goals “feeling words” and exaggerate them to the max. You are trying to convince your subconscious mind that you really DESIRE this outcome and you will be really HAPPY when it happens.

The reason you need to do this is because your subconscious mind may already have some old tapes in there about being afraid of success, beliefs about not being worthy to have success, fear of becoming powerful, memories of being told, “You’ll never make it,” and so on. That’s why you have to make your statement of goals strong, powerful, seductive and emotional.

Another way to trick the subconscious mind into letting your goals get by all the old limitations is to give a reason why it would be good to realize this goal.

Goals should be:

• a) realistic.
• b) reachable.
• c) time specific – always set a time limit.
• d) written as if it has already occurred – i.e. state it in present time. The subconscious mind does not understand future. It only knows present time. Do it this way even if you break the rules of grammar.
• e) emotionally compelling. The subconscious mind will always respond better to an idea if there is some emotion attached to it. It will give it much more creative power. Exaggerate this.
• f) justified. Always give a reason or even some excuse why it should be achieved.

Example: I feel so wonderful, proud and excited to have successfully doubled my income this coming year by December 31st, compared to last year, because it means I am now earning enough to be able to buy the house we have always wanted.

Present Time: Notice that this goal is written as if it occurred in the NOW. Even if you break the rules of grammar, you must state it in present time. The subconscious mind does not understand future.

Be Realistic

Make sure your goals are possible and reachable. Don’t set yourself up for disappointment and failure. If you have a tendency to be overly optimistic about what you can create, be conservative in your goals. On the other hand, if you tend to be over cautious and limiting of yourself, be willing to stretch your ideas of what is possible. But once you say it, be committed totally and completely.

Surrender the Outcome

This may seem odd, having stressed the need to be committed and full of powerful intention about your goals, but remember, Spirit may have other plans for you that are much better. Having made a powerful statement of intention and having started moving in that direction by giving yourself goals, you actually create the conditions for Spirit to move in – so long as you are not too attached to the outcome you have envisioned. Let Spirit work its magic. On the other hand, if you are confused and without direction then Spirit doesn’t have much to work with. So once you have set your intention and created a goal, just begin moving in that direction – and then surrender it to Spirit.

Make Specific Plans and Goals

Now that you have some general long term goals set up for your overall financial, spiritual or career vision, begin setting goals for specific aspects of the plan. Apply the same rules for writing these as you used for writing the general goals. Then list the actions that will be necessary to make these happen.

Then make some medium term and short term goals each with an action plan.
